Course Descriptions

MOLD: THE NEW ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUE

In the past ten years there has been no more significant latent environmental threat to our homes, lives and businesses than mold. Evidence of how fast mold can take over was seen immediately after hurricanes charlie, frances, katrina, wilma and others tore through florida in 2004 and 2005, and the insurance industry was quick to respond with coverage limitations. This two hour course will help students understand the basic concepts of mold and how they can successfully manage one of the 21st centuries most pressing property damage issues.

BUILDING AND MATERIAL SCIENCES

Once a building suffers water damage, mitigation procedures should begin as soon as safely possible following initial moisture intrusion. If building materials and structural assemblies are exposed to water and water vapor for extended periods, moisture penetrates into them more deeply. Materials that absorb water slowly also tend to release it slowly. Thus, it is important to understand the science of buildings and the materials that comprise them if one is to understand how to effectively mitigate damage and be able to determine the parameters of what is or should be damaged by water or other causes, e.g. Age, deteriorating, vermin, rot, etc. This two hour presentation is designed to provide contractors with such an understanding to assist them in the prompt and effective management of property claims.
